Are you a Carbo-holic?
Helpful Hints to Limit your Cravings

by: David Kamnitzer, D.C.

Do you crave sweets, bread or pasta? Do you get hungry every two hours? Perhaps you have problems with weight gain or recurring yeast infections? If so, you may be eating too many carbohydrates, especially too much fruit juice and flour based products.

These foods cause great amounts of insulin to be released into the bloodstream. Insulin promotes fat storage and if unopposed by other hormones, it will cause an increased susceptibility to health problems such as cancer, heart disease and adult-onset diabetes.

The solution
If you are experiencing any of these problems try and balance your food intake: incorporate more non-starchy vegetables into your diet, limit fruit consumption to two servings a day, cut out fruit juices (due to high sugar content) and severely limit flour-based products.

Make sure to drink lots of water (at least six, twelve ounce glasses a day) and eat mono-unsaturated oils (such as olive and canola oils), as well as salmon or fish oil capsules (other options for vegetarians) at least twice a week. Eat the right amount of good quality protein for your body (This can be determined once you know your lean body mass and level of activity) . With each meal, stay as close as possible to a 40/30/30 calorie ratio of carbohydrates to fat to protein. Remember, each gram of carbohydrates and protein is 4 calories, each gram of fat is 9 calories.

About "Oxidizers"
Personalize this prescription by knowing if you are a fast or slow "oxidizer". Fast oxidizers tend to burn out fast. Slow oxidizers are slow to get started and have a steadier but slower kind of energy . Fast oxidizers need a little more fat and oil, heavier protein and more calcium. They do better with less intense exercise. In contrast, slow oxidizers need lighter proteins, less oil and a little more good carbohydrate. They also need more potassium and do better with more intense exercise. Clues to your oxidation rate can come from special NUTRI-SPEC testing.

By applying the suggestions mentioned above for about two weeks, you should be on your way to better health. If you would like to learn more about mastering your metabolism or want to get your body composition or a NUTRI-SPEC test please call or e-mail David Kamnitzer, D.C. at (650) 855-8052.
